In Genesis chapters 18 and 19, the people of Sodom were so wicked that God could no longer tolerate them. He destroyed the city of Sodom by raining fire and brimstone down upon it. The prominent sin that earmarked the city of Sodom was homosexuality. As a result, the sin of homosexuality became known as sodomy, which is still true to this very day.
What was the sin for Sodom and Gomorrah?
It can be seen in Jude 1:7
Jude 1:7 And don't forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and serve as a warning of the eternal fire of God's judgment.
The sexual sins that are an abomination to the Lord, for which Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed can be seen in Leviticus 18. They include.
1) Homosexuality.
2) Incest.
3) Sexual relations with animal.
4) Child sacrifice to demons.
5) Any unlawful sexual relations outside of marriage.
God specifically warns what will happen of the nations that practice it(It shall vomit out its inhabitants) in Leviticus 18:24-29
“‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. 25 Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. 26 But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the foreigners residing among you must not do any of these detestable things, 27 for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. 28 And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.
29 Everyone who does any of these detestable things—such persons must be cut off from their people. 30 Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came and do not defile yourselves with them. I am the Lord your God.’”
God's condemnation of homosexuality is abundantly clear--He opposes it in every age.
- In the patriarchs (Genesis 19:1-28)
- In the Law of Moses (Leviticus 18:22; 20:13)
- In the Prophets (Ezekiel 16:46-50)
- In the New Testament (Romans 1:18-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Jude 7-8)
Why does God condemn homosexuality? Because it overturns God's fundamental design for human relationships--a design that pictures the complementary relationship between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:18-25; Matthew 19:4-6; Ephesians 5:22-33).
There are unjust judges in ancient as well as in modern times, who frame laws against God, favouring sexual immorality. The judgement of these judges are given in Isaiah 10:1-4
Isaiah 10:1-4: Woe to those who enact evil statutes And to those who constantly record [a]unjust decisions, 2 So as to [b]deprive the needy of justice And rob the poor of My people of their rights,
So that widows may be their spoil And that they may plunder the [c]orphans.
3 Now what will you do in the day of punishment, And in the devastation which will come from afar?
To whom will you flee for help? And where will you leave your [d]wealth?
4 Nothing remains but to crouch [e]among the captives Or fall [f]among the slain.
In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away And His hand is still stretched out.
We are to pray constantly for the nation that has fallen into sin, so that it may not face the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah and is not vomited out. In prayer we have to bind all the forces that are against the nation, and the unjust judges.
James 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
Matthew 18:18 "Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.
